Coming Home: 5 Things I noticed returning to Washington’s Adult Family Home Community

Over the years, my career has taken me through many areas of healthcare. I’ve worked in adult family homes, skilled nursing, admissions, workforce development, and now healthcare technology. Each role has taught me something different, but recently, as I have reconnected with providers across Washington, I’ve been reminded of something I always knew:

The Adult Family Home community is different.

When I owned and operated adult family homes in Washington, I wasn’t just running a business. Like many providers, I was caring for people during some of the most important moments of their lives. Residents became family. Their families became part of our daily lives. Staff became an extension of our own families.

Returning to this industry has felt a lot like coming home.

While reconnecting with providers across the state, I’ve noticed a lot has changed. At the same time, many things remain exactly the same.

Here are five things that stood out to me.

  1. Documentation Matters More Than Ever

The expectations around documentation continue to grow. Providers are balancing resident care with increasingly detailed recordkeeping requirements, making consistency and organization more important than ever.

  1. Families Want Transparency

Families today expect timely communication and visibility into their loved one’s care. Building trust starts with proactive communication and strong relationships.

  1. Staffing Is Still the Biggest Challenge

If there’s one challenge that hasn’t changed, it’s staffing. Providers continue to navigate recruitment, retention, training, and scheduling while maintaining quality care.

  1. Technology is Becoming a Standard Tool

Technology isn’t replacing caregivers. It’s helping providers simplify documentation, improve communication, and spend more time focused on residents.

  1. The Provider Community Is Still Strong

This is the part that makes me smile.

I still see providers helping providers. I still see owners sharing advice, resources, and support. The sense of community that drew me into this industry years ago is still here today.

The regulations may evolve. The tools may change. The way we document care may look different from the way it did a decade ago. But the mission remains the same: providing exceptional care in a place that feels like home.

A Quick Operations Check-In

As you think about your own home, ask yourself:

  • Are resident records organized and easy to access?
  • Are care plans current? Are they relevant to the care you are providing?
  • Are medication records consistently documented?
  • Do families receive regular updates?
  • Is your home prepared for its next survey?
  • Are Staff training records complete?
  • Is your emergency preparedness plan current?

Even the most experienced providers benefit from occasionally stepping back to evaluate their systems and processes.

If any of those questions made you pause, you’re not alone. Most providers are so busy running their homes that stepping back rarely makes the list.

That’s why I put together A Practical Guide for Adult Family Home Providers. It’s the resource I wish I had when I owned my homes: self-assessments for each area of your home, a monthly family update template, an inspection readiness checklist with WAC references, and a 90 day action plan to help you pick one thing and strengthen it.

It’s free, and it’s written by someone who’s been in your shoes. Enter your info below and I’ll send it over.
